To See What You Saw

I'd like to see what you saw
When you were waiting near Heaven's door.
You opened your eyes and looked upwards
Then smiled like never before.

We had prayed so hard for you to come home
But God had other plans.
Your work here on earth was finished
He reached down to you with His hands.

Your beaming smile touched deeply
Those who saw it on that fateful day.
As you smiled and took your final two breaths
They knew your soul had gone away.

Your many years were often turbulent
But I loved you little brother all the while.
Someday I want to see what you saw
When you looked up to Heaven with that smile.

I love and miss you so much my precious baby brother Tom

This poem is dedicated to my brother Thomas E. Gilbert
who rose to Heaven's light on March 8, 2006
and is a true story of his last moments.
