The Stoat

The stoat is very small and slender
With a long and bushy tail
He moves with great speed and grace
As he follows his lonely trail.

His main colour is bright chestnut brown
From the tip of his head to his back
He is distinguishable from similar mammals
By the end of his tail, which is black.

He can be found in England's woodlands
Where he stalks his innocent prey
He sits patiently waiting for rabbits
To appear at the start of day.

For such a tiny creature
Who is far less than one foot long
He faces life with courage
And a body that's slender but strong

The stoat is a beautiful creature
Of that I'm sure you'll agree
Even though he is known as a hunter
It's a pleasure to see him roam free.

The stoat is widespread throughout the British Isles.
He can be found in woods, farmland, marshes and hedgerows.
We have one that visits our garden from time to time
and it gives us great pleasure to watch him
as he races back and forth.
