Not Just A Pet

How many pets do you own, you ask
And why raise so much fuss.
Many, we answer but the fact is
We don't own them, they own us.

We thought that we were getting a pet
But there were surprises in store.
For when they crept into our hearts we found
They were not just a pet but much more.

They became a part of our family
And embedded themselves in our soul
The loyalty and devotion they give us
Completes us and makes our lives whole.

The pleasure we get from watching them play
Is a joy that is beyond compare.
And the love that shines forth from their eyes
Tells us how very much they care.

No, we can't say that we own a pet
And those words we underscore.
We have the love of a companion and friend
For they're not just a pet but much more.

Animals can be and are the closest friends we can
have for they see no faults in us.
They just want the love and devotion we can give
them and give it back to us ten-fold.
Lucky are the ones who do have them as companions.
For those who do not, find one to love in other places.
You will never regret it.

This page goes out especially for Dottie and her family
