Our Moorhen Family

Splish, Splash we heard the noise
Of water outside our door.
Followed by the sound of chirping
Like we've heard many times before.

Hidden close within the reeds
We can see a well-planned nest.
Mama Moorhen's feeding two babes
While Papa proudly guards the rest.

The babies are forever hungry
Asking for more and more.
Both parents are kept constantly busy
As they search for food galore.

This family lives in our garden
And nests in our wildlife pond.
Believe it or not we have tamed them
And together we've formed a bond.

We look forward to this time each year
Just to hear that chirping sound.
The pleasure these moorhens give to us
Is a pleasure not easily found.

Both our front and back gardens are devoted to wildlife.
In our back garden we have a very large pond for
our beautiful collection of waterfowl.
In our front garden we built a large wildlife pond which
is now home to a pair of moorhens. They turned up
one day a few years ago, and have stayed with us ever since.
The pleasure we get from these beautiful waterbirds is beyond belief.
They are now tame and come to the door asking for food.
As it is the start of the breeding season they are busy building a nest
once more. In a few weeks time we will have the pleasure of seeing
little babies playing and swimming. How wondeful nature is
and how lucky we are to have these beautiful
creatures living with us.
