Mama Drove
Mama drove the family car
And I remember well
The lessons that she taught us
As she said "just sit a spell".
Daddy never drove at all
He just sat and listened
And as she talked of love and life
Oh, how his eyes would glisten.
We could see the love between them
As they traveled through their life
He was a devoted husband
And she, a loving wife.
Daddy was just a simple man
A fisherman you see
And though he never drove the car
On his boat, daily he would be.
His shrimpboat was named the "Southern Cross"
Which he handled with loving care
My memories still take me back
To the summers we spent helping there.
He taught us how to survive in life
By enjoying the simple things
How to bounce back from the troubles
That living sometimes brings.
So, my brother and I learned our lessons well
Though our travels took us far
We learned as we watched our Daddy work
And as Mama drove the car.

Whenever I see a picture of a shrimpboat it takes me back to the
many summers my brother and I spent on our Daddy's boat, watching
as he and our Mama worked and laughed together. Memories of good
times are a special part of everyone's heart and soul.
