Majestic Dwindling
He stands so silent and majestic
His body shows no signs of fear.
His senses keep him in total alert
Warning if danger is near.
Not a sound assails his hearing
As he gazes over his domain.
The leaves sparkle with dawns early light
And freshness from a new fallen rain.
The morning sun has fully risen
So on padded feet he quietly moves away.
To spend the hours in restless slumber
Till dusk greets him in his secluded hideaway.
He somehow feels that time is against him
For his kind has dwindled to a precious few.
So he searches each night for a new mate
To help his species make it through.

The Florida Panther is one of the most endangered
animals in our country. There are now only between
50 and 70 left in the Florida Everglades. Desperate
means have been made to introduce other puma
subcultures to the area to help improve the gene pool
which has deteriorated so greatly due to inbreeding. This
measure does seem to be working to some extent. We
can only hope and pray.
