Summer Into Autumn

As Summer drifts into Autumn
The trees wear a bright blanket of gold
The bloom of flowers is fading away
And the breeze holds a hint of winter cold.

Cold as the feelings lying deep in my heart
As I remember your last words to me
And the sight of you turning and walking away
Is the image I will always see.

Here by the river where we stood together
We enjoyed each warm summer day.
Never knowing that at the end of the season
Heartache and sadness would come our way.

Now as summer drifts into Autumn
And birds send out their mournful call
I stand in sorrow by this lonely river
Sadly watching the golden leaves fall.

To lose a love at any time can be devastating, but somehow
when the summer is fading away and there is a chill in the air,
the pain seems so much harder to bear.
All we can do is carry on and hope spring will
bring new life into our world.
